Virtual Library-
www.kyvl.org
One of the
most exciting developments in provision of library services in many years
(ever?) is the launch of the Kentucky Virtual Library—a catalogue of databases
available to any cardholder in a public or academic library in the state. The
web site provides access to the sort of
data formerly only available through expensive subscriptions or through
research at large universities. The best attribute of the Internet—the
provision of information on an equal basis, regardless of geography or economic
status—is manifest in KVL.
The basic
mission of KVL:
Kentuckians
will have equitable access to quality library and information resources and
qualified, well-trained staff to support the Virtual University as well as meet
broader needs for learning, working and living.
Goals:
1. To work
collaboratively to effectively manage the programs and services of a Virtual
Library.
2. To enhance
the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of resource sharing among Kentucky
libraries by utilizing current and emerging technologies.
3. To ensure
universal access to a robust statewide telecommunications network with adequate
bandwidth to support the delivery of multimedia information resources and
services
4. To increase
access to available electronic resources through cooperative statewide
licensing agreements
5. To provide
a core collection of digital information resources at lower per unit cost to
enhance teaching, learning, research and public services
6. To prepare
students, faculty and staff of Kentucky's educational institutions and the
citizens of the Commonwealth to be full participants in today's information-based
global economy and in the life-long learning process by providing services to
develop information literacy.
KVL Databases
To access the
KVL databases while in the library, no passwords are needed. Ask a librarian to
show you the link. However,
you are welcome to access KVL from home! You will need
passwords for KVL’s main page, and should you wish to access the Ebsco
databases or the FirstSearch databases directly through their URLs (available
on the library home page), there are also passwords for those. These passwords
are available to any person who holds a library card from the Bell Co. Public
Library System.
We may hand them to you upon presentation of your library card, or
may give them over the phone once your library card has been verified.
What will you
find at KVL?
The
main URL for KVL is:
http://www.kyvl.org
Go there to see descriptions of the various databases (full text magazine
articles, catalogues for various Kentucky libraries, abstracts and citations,
etc.) Also, explore NoveList and Grolier Encyclopedia.
