PINEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY

The football field was named after Ed Samuels. He started the football program at PHS. Before the field was called Pursifull Field.

On a September night in 1920, the history of Pineville High School Football began.  A group of Pineville business men, called to meet at the Continental Hotel by R.E. Samuels. The purpose of the meeting was to form an athletic association. Its goal was to bring football to Pineville High School.

Following is a list of the membership of that association:

Each man donated $10 to begin the football program. R.N. Roundtree was named coach.

For several years, the mountain lions played on a field in West Pineville (Wallsend).  The association wanted a
field closer to the school.  So R.E. Samuels, with the help of Ray Moss went about the task of raising money.
Finally a track of land became available and was purchased from the J.J. Gibson estate.  The field was made
ready and named Samuels Field in honor of R.E. Samuels, the father of Pineville Football.

The Mountain Lions charged on to Samuels Field for the first time in 1923. Many changes have taken place over
the years and changes will continue to take place over the coming years.
